Jianyang, Fujian

Made by fire.
Carried by hand.

Tenmoku tea bowls and hand-knotted prayer beads. Fired twice in a kiln town; knotted once, bead by bead, in the studio next door.

The studio

One potter, one knitter,
the same afternoon light.

We fire in a gas kiln in Jianyang, the town where tenmoku has been made for nine hundred years. The beads are knotted in the same room while the kiln cools — a slower, quieter way to wait.
