About

Clay & Cord is a two-person studio in Jianyang, Fujian — the town where tenmoku has been fired for nine hundred years. One of us throws and fires the bowls; the other knots the beads in the same room while the kiln cools.

We started because the two things we use every day — a cup for tea and a strand for the hand — were being sold as decoration rather than as objects you actually live with. Everything here is made to be used: the cups hold 90–150 ml, the malas have 108 beads and a knot between each, and the leather darkens where you wear it.

We fire in a gas kiln, twice — bisque at 800 °C, glaze at 1,300 °C in reduction. Each firing takes three days: two to climb, one to cool. The hare's fur and oil spots are the kiln's decision, not ours.

Pieces are photographed individually and priced individually. There is no second identical cup.
